General Practitioner (GP) Services
A General Practitioner (GP) is a general medical doctor who treats common medical conditions. They can also diagnose acute and chronic illnesses; however, when necessary they will refer you to the appropriate specialist. A GP’s speciality is general medicine. This is why they’re everyone’s first point of contact in matters of personal health. General practitioners are able to provide the necessary treatment or prescription for a wide range of medical conditions and health issues.
GPs take holistic approach of general practice that considers the psychological, social, as well as the biological factors of a person’s health relevant to the care of each patient’s illness. General Practitioners at National Telemedicine Doctors can treat more than you can imagine – some of their services offered through this site include:
Psychologists
(General and Clinical)
The psychologists we have on our team have undergone specialised training in assessing and diagnosing major mental illnesses, as well as other psychological problems.
Through their specialist training, they are qualified to provide expert opinion in clinical and compensation areas and they do this through the application of scientific research and psychological theory to solve psychological problems. As everyone is so different, the approach and solution are tailored to your needs and situation. For people who experience illness, stress, eating disorders, and relationship difficulties, and other such problems, a psychologist is able to teach coping strategies and help with the coping process. Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, but in many cases, the treatments provided by psychologists have been shown to be just as good, and sometimes better than drugs, especially when it comes to treating issues like depression and anxiety. Although, for many people it’s a combination of treatment and medication that produces the best results.

DIETITIANS
Dietitians are qualified professionals whose skills involve providing expert dietary and nutritional advice. They translate the most recent scientific information about nutrition into practical dietary advice about what people should eat.
Dietitians help with everything from basic nutrition education to weight loss or gain, healthy balanced diet, food allergies or intolerances as well as adapting menus for people with conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer and digestive problems or who are recovering from surgery.
Our Accredited Practicing Dietitians (APD) are nutrition experts who translates scientific evidences into practical advice and can help you improve your lifestyle and eating habits and typically work with doctors to help manage medical conditions, and dietary requirements, including:
- Nutrition and malnutrition support;
- High blood pressure, diabetes;
- Healthy eating during pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS);
- Gastrointestinal conditions: Food Intolerance and allergy, GORD, IBS;
- High cholesterol.
Podiatrists
A podiatrist treats conditions such as diseases of the blood supply or nerves, arthritis, as well as muscular and soft-tissue disorders. These foot doctors help to prevent ulcerations and manage pressure points to help you stay mobile and their services are especially important to those with diabetes, who are at increased risk of lower limb amputation.
If your toenails are not looking too great, you may want a pedicurist. However, for serious health concerns with your feet or lower limbs in general, you will want to see a podiatrist. Podiatrists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of the lower extremity, particularly the foot and specialise in diagnosing and providing nonsurgical treatment of foot pathology.
Podiatrists provide help for, and care with:
- Ankle and foot disorders;
- Pain relief treatment for legs, ankles and feet;
- Care for chronic conditions such as arthritis and diabetes;
- General advice;
- Nail surgery;
- Sports podiatry;
- Callus;
- Blisters;
- Corns;
- Routine and general nail care;
- Nail edge resection;
- Prescriptions for custom made orthotic appliances;
- Ingrown toenails;
- Strengthening and stretching training programs;
- Nail and skin conditions;
- Children’s podiatry;
- Supplies and dressings for podiatry.
This list is by no means comprehensive, but it does list the most common ways a podiatrist can help. National Telemedicine Doctors is a telehealth practice and podiatrists at this practice offer consultations to patients remotely by phone or video and offer only those services that can be offered without an in-person consultation. During your consultation your National Telemedicine health practitioner will advise you if a face-to-face consultation with a health practitioner is required.
PHYSIOTHERAPISTS
Physiotherapists help people by diagnosing, management, and preventing movement disorders. This includes any movement-related disorders caused by illness, disability, or injury. It’s a little-known fact that physios also work with stroke victims, premature babies, incontinent women and people who suffer from conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, and Parkinson’s disease.
Physiotherapists use a combination of manual therapy, physical and electrophysical agents and movement training, amongst other drug-free techniques, to restore movement and function as well as relieve pain. These techniques can also help to prevent other problems from happening. A physio will treat you when you see them, and they also provide an at-home exercise plan to help you recover faster, which is tailored to suit your body’s specific individual needs. Following the at-home exercise plan can help prevent further problems from occurring or from the same injury reoccurring.
Treatments physios offer:
Physiotherapists often work as part of a multidisciplinary team who help get your body back on track as fast as possible. Some treatments they provide include:
- dry needling and soft tissue massage to provide pain relief;
- manipulating, stretching, and mobilising stiff or frozen joints;
- Pilates-based routines and other similar core stability training;
- protecting hypermobile or injured joints with bracing or taping;
- ergonomic advice and postural correction for work stations;
- Prescription of injury specific at-home exercise, and gym programs for self-managed recovery.
Physiotherapy can be the primary care treatment for certain injuries or, it can be provided as part of a comprehensive care plan.National Telemedicine Doctors is a telehealth practice and physiotherapists at this practice offer consultations to patients remotely by phone or video and offer only those services that can be offered without an in-person consultation. During your consultation your National Telemedicine health practitioner will advise you if a face-to-face consultation with a health practitioner is required.
Allied Health Referral Service
(Wide Range)
You may need an allied health referral letter from your health care professional if you need to see an allied health practitioner – if you take services of a Specialist/Allied Health practitioner without a referral, Medicare will not cover any of your costs.
Any General Practitioner at National Telemedicine Doctors can write a referral for you if you need a referral to a registered specialist or allied health practitioner working through our platform or outside our platform.
Allied health professions are distinct from medical, dental or nursing professions. Allied Health professionals are university educated health professionals who specialise in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of a variety of illnesses and conditions. They are usually part of a multidisciplinary health team who offer specialised support for patients of all ages, and health care needs.
Their aim is to help restore and maintain peak sensory, physical, psychological, social and cognitive functions by providing rehabilitation, direct patient care, health improvement interventions, treatment, diagnostics and other specialised support.

Specialist Referral Service
(any specialty)
A specialist referral is a formal and written request from one health practitioner to another health practitioner or health service that asks them to diagnose or treat you for a particular condition. A referral also indicates the test or consultation that is clinically necessary.
Our specialist referral service allows you to receive a specialist referral letter from an Australian Medical Board-certified doctor, without leaving home and if a referral is issued we can email you the referral letter following the consultation. Using our specialist referral service, you can always choose the individual specialist health practitioner you want to be referred to or you can ask your doctor to recommend someone and have a referral emailed to them for a range of specialist health services.
Any of National Telemedicine Doctors’ GPs are able to write referrals for you. Some specialists will not see you without a referral and Medicare benefits will not be payable if you visit a specialist without a referral.
RADIOLOGY REFERRAL SERVICE
Radiology, also called diagnostic imaging, is the medical discipline that uses medical imaging to diagnose and treat diseases within the bodies of animals, including humans and allows doctors to see inside the body.

Do I need a referral?
In most cases, you do require a radiology referral to get radiological and other imaging tests – you can get this from your general practitioner, nurse, specialist or physiotherapist. There are certain tests and services which can only be requested by specific specialists – diagnostic imaging services (like some MRIs), as an example.
The GPs at National Telemedicine Doctors are able to provide radiologist referrals. Like most services that are largely referral-based, if you have radiology appointment without a referral, Medicare will not cover any of your costs.
PATHOLOGY REFERRALS
A pathology test is a way for doctors to assess, diagnose and determine treatment for certain diseases and other conditions. These tests examine samples of your body’s tissue, including biopsied tissue, urine, faeces, or blood.
Pathology tests are important because they help nurses and doctors to diagnose, prevent, monitor and manage a host of conditions such as: infections, cancers, chronic diseases, and allergies.

Do I need a referral?
Pathology is a very complex area of medicine. Without a pathology referral from a qualified health practitioner it’s unlikely you would know which test you need. And even if you did, being able to interpret the results takes expert training. So, it is unlikely any pathology lab would agree to perform the test without a referral.
The GPs at National Telemedicine Doctors are able to provide pathology referrals. Like most services that are largely referral-based, if you have pathology appointment without a referral, Medicare will not cover any of your costs.
